If you came to Eindhoven or the Netherlands in general, for either education or work there is a good chance at some point you will find yourself dating a Dutch person. Here are some things you could expect!

Brutally direct

The Dutch are known to be very forward to the point it would be considered rude in other cultures. It’s just who they are and I can assure you they mean no offense, it’s just part of the way the Dutch communicate. So if you made an effort to wear something nice to the date and they don’t comment on it, it might be it’s just not their taste. It doesn’t mean they don’t appreciate the effort.

Go Dutch

You had a great date, you connected, you had a good time. You had a great dinner together but when it’s time to pay the bill you’re date might suggest you split the bill. Although there are definitely more countries where splitting the bill is common, the Dutch have apparently taken the lead in this custom since it is literally called going Dutch!

 Say it in English

The Dutch are usually great at the English language, this means if it isn’t your first language and you might struggle speaking English they will more than likely still understand what you are saying! Don’t feel self conscious, just feel free and enjoy. Also a glass of wine might help you feeling less aware of yourself.

No doubt

We already talked about Dutch directness earlier and how it might be unexpected and leaving you not knowing how to react to it. This very trade will actually serve you further along. If you had a date or two with a Dutch person you will not have to wonder if they really like you or not. If they want to continue your dating adventure you will know, if they feel you would be better compatible as friends I guarantee you will also know.

Dating people from other cultures than your own can always prove to be challenge, hopefully we gave you some helpful advice on what to expect while dating a Dutch person.

We hope you find your love soon!
