It’s National Compliment Day!

Today is the 11th National Compliment Day. This year may be more important than previous years because of Corona, but how do you give a good compliment?

We don’t give each other enough compliments. That’s why National Compliments Day was created on March 1st 2003. Not giving a lot of compliments is in the nature of the Dutch, which is sad because everyone needs appreciation.

Research and the effects

Research has shown that compliments and positive attention motivates us more than gifts. A compliment causes the substance dopamine to be produced in your body, making you happier. The atmosphere will be better and people will be nicer to you as well. That’s why you’re not allowed to buy gifts on this day.

How to give a good compliment

It seems easy, but some people find it difficult to give compliments. How do you give a compliment that really makes someone happy? Try to make it personal, start with ‘you …’. Give a concrete compliment, not just ‘you’re doing a good job’. What did that person do so well? Give the compliment wherever the person feels comfortable: if the person likes to be in the spotlight, do it in front of others. And don’t include ‘but’ or ‘if’ in your compliment.

Don’t forget to give your colleagues, friends and family a compliment to make them feel better today!
