How to make friends in Eindhoven!

If you are new in Eindhoven you probably don’t have friends here yet. It can seem a bit scary to try and make new friends in a country where you don’t know anybody and the way people socialise is maybe different than what you are used to. Here are some tips to help you out!

Don’t think about language!

Most Dutch people and expats here speak English very well. So if you don’t speak Dutch don’t feel bothered, it really isn’t a problem. You can spontaneously start a conversation in English and people will respond to you!

It’s ok if you don’t have Dutch friends

Dutch people can be great friends but if you are here as an expat it can be harder to befriend a Dutch person because they socialise differently and keep their personal life and work life separate, while in a lot of countries people make friends with their colleagues.

There are a lot of social gatherings with the sole purpose of expats finding other expats to hang out with, go to them! you will meet a lot of interesting people from all over the world, and they will be able to relate to your experiences as an International.

Join an international club

Whether you are into sports, gaming, crafts or yoga, there are literally international clubs for everything in Eindhoven. Joining them can be a fun way to enjoy your hobby and make new friends.

Volunteering

Volunteering is an easy way to meet new people, in a setting that is productive but informal. Whether it is at an animal shelter, a sports club, an international initiative, or even the church you will probably find like minded people who have similar interests, which is can be a good basis for a friendship!
